Atlanta Checker Cab passengers will soon be able to pay by credit card without leaving their seat.
Beginning Oct. 6, San Jose, Calif.-based VeriFone Systems Inc. (NYSE: PAY), which has a large office in Alpharetta, Ga., will roll out payment devices that allow customers to pay for cab fare with a credit card, debit card or stored value card from the back of the cab.
"We are trying to penetrate most of the major cities in North America," said Bud Waller, executive vice president of VeriFone.
VeriFone already offers the service in New York City, Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C.
"Atlanta was a big city that was missing," Waller said.
Atlanta Checker Cab Inc. has been accepting credit cards for about 30 years, but this will allow passengers to retain control of their card, not having to give it to the driver for payment, said Rick Hewatt, president of the cab company.
The payment devices are currently in about 50 Atlanta Checker Cabs, and Hewatt expects to have them installed in nearly all 200 cabs in his fleet in 60 to 90 days.
The device is also a safety issue for drivers, Hewatt said, since it will mean drivers have less cash on them.
The device also allows news, weather and advertising.
"Passengers can get the latest news, sports and some of our own advertisements on what we provide beyond passenger transportation," he said.
